Crowns and Bridges
Dental Crowns are a covering or a tooth shaped cap that is placed on a damaged tooth or an implant. Crowns restore the shape, size, form and function of a tooth. Crowns are very crucial if the remaining tooth structure is not adequate enough to withstand forces and loads. Usually this is the case when the tooth is root canal treated.
Bridges are fabricated when a tooth/teeth are missing. Support is taken from the tooth in front and the tooth at the back to help support the missing tooth.
The procedure involved preparing the base tooth first, post which an impression is taken. The crown is fabricated at a dental lab. At times a few trials may be needed to ensure the fit and match to the adjacent teeth. Once we are satisfied with the outcome and we get a go ahead from the patient, the crown if cemented to the underlying tooth.
Crowns and bridges usually are of two types, metal fused to ceramic or complete ceramic. Both today come with warranties and usually last 8-10 years with periodic follow ups and maintenance.
